Reddit was down earlier today: Here are the issues reported by users and current status

Reddit users experienced widespread disruption earlier today, with thousands reporting that they were unable to access the platform. Many encountered “internal server error” messages when trying to load the site or app.

According to DownDetector, which monitors service interruptions through user submissions, more than 3,000 outage reports were logged at the peak of the incident. Of these, around 55% of users reported issues on the Reddit mobile app, 35% faced difficulties on the website, and the remaining 10% reported problems with Reddit’s servers.

The disruption was primarily reported in the United States, though users in other regions also noted intermittent access problems. Social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) saw users sharing their experiences and memes about the sudden downtime, amplifying awareness of the outage.

The issue, however, was short-lived. Within half an hour, reports on DownDetector began to drop significantly. Outage submissions declined from over 3,200 at the peak to fewer than 1,800 within 30 minutes, suggesting that Reddit’s technical teams quickly addressed the underlying problem.

At the time of writing this article, Reddit services are back online, and DownDetector is no longer showing significant downtime reports. Most users are able to access the platform normally across web and mobile apps.

An internal server error generally occurs when a server cannot process a request due to technical issues such as software bugs, overloaded systems, or database errors. It may also result from configuration problems or temporary failures in third-party services that platforms like Reddit depend on. Importantly, this type of error originates from the platform’s servers and is not caused by the user’s device or internet connection.

While Reddit has not issued an official explanation for today’s outage, the quick resolution indicates a temporary technical fault rather than a prolonged disruption. Users can now continue using Reddit as usual.
