Qualcomm has introduced its latest premium chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, expanding the company’s premium tier family and providing consumers with increased choice and flexibility. The chipset comes as the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and is positioned below Qualcomm’s latest flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The upcoming OnePlus 15R is also confirmed to launch as the first phone with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5: Performance details

Powered by Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 delivers peak speeds of up to 3.8 GHz, translating to a 36% boost in performance. It also has an updated Adreno 840 GPU, which brings an 11% improvement in graphics rendering, while web browsing is promised to be 76% more responsive. Further, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 also gets Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU, offering 46% improvement in AI tasks compared to the SD 8 Gen 3.

This new chipset also gets the Frame Motion Engine 3.0 support, like on the 8 Elite Gen 5, but without Adreno High-Performance Memory (HPM). The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 also uses the same X80 5G Modem-RF System, which was also there on last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. Multiplayer gaming is also said to be more seamless with this chipset, with better connectivity and consistent high frame rates. The chipset also promises better photography control with improved context-aware autofocus, auto-white balance, and night videography.

OnePlus will be the first OEM to bring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 to the market, as the company has announced that the OnePlus 15R will be the first phone to be powered by the latest chipset in India. The phone is scheduled to launch on December 17. Other Android OEMs like iQOO, Motorola, and Vivo are also expected to announce their phones with this chipset in the coming months.
