Wireless charging in smartphones hasn’t really seen that big a jump in advancements. However, in 2025, we will see a lot of Android phones adopting a new standard called Qi2 (pronounced as Chee-2).
Qi2 wireless charging specification, developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), represents a significant advancement in wireless charging technology. Announced in early 2023, Qi2 builds on the original Qi standard, incorporating features inspired by Apple's MagSafe technology.
Here's how Qi2 will improve the smartphone charging experience:
Faster charging speeds
Qi2 offers up to 15W charging speeds, a notable increase from the standard Qi's 7.5W. This means that Qi2-certified devices can charge up to twice as fast, reducing the time users spend tethered to a charger.
Efficient and safe
One of the standout features of Qi2 is the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), which uses a ring of magnets to align the charging coils perfectly. This magnetic alignment ensures that devices are always in the optimal position for effective power transfer, improving charging efficiency and reducing the risk of overheating. This addresses safety concerns related to heat generation in batteries, making wireless charging safer for users.
The magnetic alignment also makes it easier to use Qi2 chargers. Users no longer need to worry about placing their devices correctly on the charger, as the magnets ensure proper alignment. This is very much similar to Apple's MagSafe technology, which uses magnets to snap devices into place.
Qi2 intelligently detects and adjusts to a device's power needs, ensuring efficient and safe charging tailored to each device.
Sustainability benefits
By eliminating the need for cables and reducing mechanical stress on charging ports, Qi2 contributes to reducing electronic waste.
