Google is rolling out a refreshed homepage and prompt bar design for the Gemini app on Android, offering a cleaner interface and restructured tools. This redesign appears limited to select users for now and comes amid growing competition in the AI assistant space, particularly with rising interest in Perplexity AI.
What’s newOn mobile, the Gemini prompt bar remains docked at the bottom of the screen, but feature chips that previously cluttered the UI have now been moved into a dedicated “Tools” bottom sheet. The icon for this new tools section appears next to the ‘+’ button, and the shift results in a cleaner, more spacious interface—especially in portrait orientation.
Descriptions under features like Deep Research and Canvas have been removed. Instead, the redesign focuses on clarity and quick access. Users now see streamlined buttons labelled Write, Build, and Research. Tapping on these brings up sample prompts designed to highlight Gemini’s creative and analytical abilities.
Suggested prompts examples• Write (via Canvas): Compose an email for a block party, a thank-you note after a job interview, or a kid-friendly book summary.
• Build (also using Canvas): Generate a basic website, build a recipe app, or even a fireworks generator.
• Research (via Deep Research): Look up travel plans, health trends, or compare services like daycare or mobile plans.
These suggestions aim to guide new or infrequent users and demonstrate how Gemini can assist in everyday tasks, similar to how Perplexity surfaces research-driven results.
AvailabilityThe redesign has so far appeared for users running the beta version of the Google app on Android. It’s not yet available on the stable release, and changes to the navigation drawer with search integration are also still pending.
The redesign is part of Google’s broader effort to keep Gemini relevant as AI tools gain traction. This follows the recent launch of audio overviews and wider Wear OS support.
