Back in May 2024, OpenAI was told by the court to keep all its chat logs, so the NYT could check whether its content had been used unfairly. OpenAI pushed back, saying this was an overreach and could violate user privacy.

With the new ruling, OpenAI no longer has to store new chat data after September 26, except for certain flagged accounts related to the NYT’s ongoing investigation.
The NYT can still expand the list of those flagged accounts as it continues to look into OpenAI’s old records — but for now, OpenAI finally gets some relief from having to store every ChatGPT conversation.
