OpenAI is reportedly developing a generative music tool capable of creating original compositions from text or audio prompts, according to The Information.
The system is designed to help users generate or enhance soundtracks — for instance, by adding music to videos or layering guitar accompaniments onto recorded vocals. However, it remains unclear when the tool will launch or whether OpenAI plans to offer it as an independent product or integrate it into existing platforms like ChatGPT or the video-generation app Sora.
Sources cited in the report say OpenAI has partnered with students from the Juilliard School to annotate musical scores, a step intended to build high-quality training data for the model.
OpenAI has experimented with music generation before, though its earlier models were released prior to ChatGPT’s debut. In recent years, the company has primarily focused on voice-based technologies such as text-to-speech and speech-to-text.
The move would put OpenAI in direct competition with other companies developing AI-powered music tools, including Google and Suno, both of which are already exploring similar creative applications.
