OpenAI has begun previewing Pulse, a new feature for ChatGPT Pro users on mobile that shifts the assistant from reactive to proactive. Instead of only answering questions, ChatGPT will now carry out background research and surface daily updates in the form of visual cards you can scan or expand for detail.
The updates are shaped by your chats, feedback, and optionally by connected apps like Gmail and Google Calendar. Link a calendar, for example, and ChatGPT might prepare a draft agenda, nudge you about a birthday gift, or suggest restaurants near an upcoming trip.
"Think of treating ChatGPT like a super-competent personal assistant: sometimes you ask for things you need in the moment, but if you share general preferences, it will do a good job for you proactively," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in a post on X.
Altman also said that Pulse also gives an idea on what he believes will be the future of ChatGPT. "This also points to what I believe is the future of ChatGPT: a shift from being all reactive to being significantly proactive, and extremely personalized," he added.
Early use cases sound deliberately everyday: a quick dinner recipe, progress tips for training, or follow-ups on a hobby you’ve been discussing in chat. Each morning, the cards refresh, giving you only that day’s curated set—unless you choose to save an item or expand it into a conversation.
Users can fine-tune what Pulse tracks by hitting “curate” or offering simple thumbs-up/down feedback. Over time, the idea is that these signals teach ChatGPT what’s genuinely useful.
OpenAI stresses that all topics are filtered through safety checks, and that integrations like Calendar remain optional. For now, Pulse is limited to Pro users as the company gathers data on what works. The plan is to refine it before bringing it to Plus and eventually to everyone.
