OpenAI CEO Sam Altman got a few people excited when, in his New Year's blog, he talked about delving into AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). This left many tongues wagging because AGI is far more advanced than AI. It can work primarily like a human, thinking, learning, and solving problems across a variety of areas. It can do a lot of things that ChatGPT can’t.
However, Altman has now asked the excited fans to hold their horses, as OpenAI has not started working on AGI yet. Everything about AGI is just social media hype and rumors, he clarified.
In a tweet, Altman said, “Twitter hype is out of control again. We are not gonna deploy AGI next month, nor have we built it”. Altman also mentioned that while OpenAI has planned to release some new features soon, none of them include AGI. He has asked people to lower their expectations 100x.
In his blog titled Reflections, Altman had said that OpenAI is closer to building AGI. “We are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it.
We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents “join the workforce” and materially change the output of companies. We continue to believe that iteratively putting great tools in the hands of people leads to great, broadly-distributed outcomes,” Altman’s blog read.
