OpenAI has good news for ChatGPT free users with this ‘update’: What is it and how it benefit users

OpenAI has started rolling out a major update to ChatGPT’s Memory feature that brings improved experience to users on the free tier. Previously limited to paid subscribers, the upgraded Memory functionality now offers free users the ability to carry forward context across conversations, making interactions feel more natural and relevant.

As per an update in OpenAI’s support documentation, the rollout for free users started on June 3, 2025. With this update, ChatGPT can now reference recent chat history, even across separate sessions. The goal is to provide continuity and tailored responses that adapt to a user’s habits and instructions.

OpenAI notes that the system doesn’t just rely on saved memory entries—it also temporarily references recent interactions. This means ChatGPT may provide responses that feel more contextual, even without users explicitly repeating past preferences.

For those unaware, ChatGPT’s Memory is designed to help the AI recall information shared in past conversations. For instance, if a user mentions preferences like avoiding em dashes or always receiving answers in a particular tone, ChatGPT can remember and apply these instructions in future sessions. This enables more personalised and consistent responses over time.

While this is a notable step forward, there are still some restrictions for users on the free plan. According to reports, the free-tier version of Memory only supports short-term continuity. It won’t offer the same depth of historical recall available to ChatGPT Plus or Pro users. Those plans benefit from more robust memory capabilities that span older conversations.

Despite the limitations, users who prefer not to have their data remembered can manage the feature via settings. OpenAI allows users to turn off Memory entirely or delete specific memories. There’s also the option to use “Temporary Chat”—a mode similar to a private browser session, where no data is saved.
