Even with AI taking huge strides, “Google it” remains very much part of the lexicon. However, that term -- or Google Search for that matter -- are not part of Sam Altman’s vocabulary. At a recent dinner with reporters, the OpenAI chief revealed he hasn’t used Google Search in some time. “I don’t use Google anymore. I legitimately cannot tell you the last time I did a Google search,” Altman was quoted as saying in The Verge’s Command Line newsletter.
It’s easy to assume the CEO turns instead to his own creation, ChatGPT, for information. OpenAI recently launched GPT-5, its latest flagship model, which Altman called a “major upgrade” and “a significant step along the path of AGI.” He admitted that after using GPT-5, returning to GPT-4 felt “miserable.” While the new model is free for everyone, backlash from some users prompted OpenAI to restore GPT-4o for those who preferred it.
Despite being rivals in the AI race, OpenAI and Google maintain ties on the infrastructure side. Alongside Microsoft and Oracle, Google Cloud is one of the suppliers providing computational power for ChatGPT. On Alphabet’s latest earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai said he was “very excited” about the partnership, calling Google Cloud “an open platform” with a history of supporting AI labs and startups.
