OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Agent, a powerful upgrade that transforms its AI assistant into a real-world task performer. ChatGPT Agent is designed to make things easier for users by offloading complex activities such as planning events, conducting research, summarizing inboxes, and even building presentation decks — all from a single prompt.

What ChatGPT Agent can do

ChatGPT Agent combines the strengths of earlier tools like Operator and Deep Research. It can browse websites, run code, analyze data, and create structured documents — all by using its own virtual computer. The agent is capable of switching between a graphical web browser, terminal, text browser, and spreadsheet editor depending on the task.

Whether it’s preparing a competitive report, booking travel, or updating a financial model, ChatGPT Agent can handle the end-to-end process. It also integrates with user apps through connectors like Gmail and Google Calendar, making it useful for both work and life.

Safety and user control

Recognizing the risks of automation, OpenAI has built strong safeguards into the system. ChatGPT Agent asks for explicit permission before executing real-world actions such as making purchases or sending emails. During high-risk tasks, it requires active user oversight through “Watch Mode.”

A secure browser takeover mode allows users to log into sites privately — ChatGPT never sees or stores your credentials. Users can also clear browsing data or disconnect from websites instantly through settings.

Performance and benchmarks

The new agent delivers state-of-the-art results in AI evaluations. On Humanity’s Last Exam, which tests expert-level knowledge across subjects, it scored a leading 41.6. It also surpassed human benchmarks in DSBench for data modeling and beat Microsoft Copilot in spreadsheet editing accuracy.

Availability and message limits

ChatGPT Agent is rolling out to Pro users starting today, with Plus and Team plans getting access over the next few days. Pro users receive 400 messages per month; others get 40. Enterprise and Education access is expected in the coming weeks.
