Nvidia has announced DLSS 5, the latest version of its Deep Learning Super Sampling technology that introduces AI-powered neural rendering for games. The company said the new technology can generate photoreal lighting and material details in real time, aiming to reduce the gap between real-time rendering in games and cinematic visual effects.
The announcement was made during the company’s GTC event. Nvidia said DLSS 5 will arrive this fall and will be supported by several major game publishers and developers.
What DLSS 5 brings to gaming
DLSS 5 introduces a real-time neural rendering model that processes colour and motion vectors from each frame of a game and uses AI to generate lighting and material properties. According to Nvidia, the system understands scene elements such as characters, hair, fabric and lighting conditions.
The AI model analyses the scene and generates visuals that maintain the structure of the original game frame while adding details such as subsurface skin scattering, reflections on hair and light interaction with fabric.
Nvidia said DLSS 5 can operate in real time at resolutions of up to 4K, allowing games to maintain interactive frame rates while improving visual detail.
The company also noted that developers will have controls for intensity, colour grading and masking so that artists can decide where and how enhancements are applied while maintaining the artistic style of the game.
How DLSS is evolving
DLSS was first introduced in 2018 as an AI technology to improve performance by upscaling images and later generating frames. The technology has been integrated in more than 750 games.
With DLSS 5, Nvidia is shifting the focus from performance improvement to visual realism. The system blends traditional rendering with generative AI so that graphics can look more natural while remaining consistent from frame to frame.
Availability and supported games
Nvidia said DLSS 5 will be supported by publishers and developers including Bethesda, CAPCOM, Hotta Studio, NetEase, NCSOFT, S-GAME, Tencent, Ubisoft and Warner Bros. Games.
The technology is expected to appear in titles such as AION 2, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Black State, Delta Force, Hogwarts Legacy, NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, Phantom Blade Zero, Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. According to Nvidia, DLSS 5 will start rolling out to supported games later this year.
