Nothing has announced Nothing OS 4.0 (NOS 4.0), its latest software update, bringing a sharper design language, new multitasking tools, and better visibility into AI usage. The beta rollout will soon reach Nothing smartphones, with updates shared via the company’s social channels.
The UI refinements start with standardised components and reworked lock screen clocks, making the system feel more fluid. Nothing is also pushing its signature look further with Extra Dark Mode, a cooler, deeper version of dark mode designed to save power and reduce eye strain in low light.
On the productivity front, Pop-up View gets a major upgrade. Users can now run two floating apps at once, swiping up from the bottom edge to minimise windows or pulling down to expand them. It’s a more flexible take on multitasking that brings Nothing OS closer to big-screen efficiency.
Privacy and AI transparency are another focus. NOS 4.0 introduces an AI Usage Dashboard that tracks which large language models (LLMs) are active, with daily and weekly breakdowns. Users can see which AI systems are at work, how often they’re triggered, and drill down into individual model usage. Subtle status hints throughout the interface also help keep AI behaviour visible and easy to manage.
While Nothing is still an Android-based system, NOS 4.0 shows the company experimenting with more original ideas—particularly around AI visibility and personalisation—that help it stand out in a crowded smartphone landscape.
