New Aadhaar app

Earlier today, Ashwini Vaishnaw, via a post on X, announced the new Aadhaar app for smartphones. The new app, according to the post, brings together face ID authentication and AI to offer better Aadhaar-related services to citizens.

The biggest benefit of using the new Aadhaar app is that it eliminates the need to carry a physical copy of Aadhaar by offering users the option to keep their personal information right on their phone through the app using QR-based verifications and real-time face ID authentication.

Key features of the new Aadhaar app

Face ID authentication: The app introduces face-based biometric verification for Aadhaar authentication, adding a layer of security without the need for fingerprints or iris scans.

QR code-based verification: Users can verify their identity instantly by scanning a QR code, allowing seamless digital Aadhaar verification similar to UPI payments.

No need for physical cards or photocopies: The digital-first approach removes the necessity to carry or submit Aadhaar hard copies for verification at hotels, shops, or during travel.

Real-time authentication: The app uses real-time facial recognition, ensuring immediate and secure identity verification.

Stronger privacy protections: Aadhaar data can only be shared with the user’s consent, reducing risks of misuse or unauthorised access.

Secure sharing: The app allows users to share only the required portion of their Aadhaar data, protecting against data overexposure.

Forgery protection: The app is designed to guard against tampering, editing, or photoshopping of Aadhaar details.

No photocopy handover: Users will no longer be required to provide Aadhaar photocopies to hotels or vendors, reducing data leak vulnerabilities.

100% digital solution: The app supports full digital operation, aiming to streamline all Aadhaar-based services through smartphones.

Availability and usage

The app is currently in Beta testing and will be rolled out nationally after successful trials. Users will be able to access it from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store once the public version is released.
