Messi meets AI: Digital artwork of iconic goal sells for $1.87 million

In a rare fusion of art, technology, and sport, a digital artwork inspired by Lionel Messi’s favourite goal was auctioned for a staggering $1.87 million at Christie’s on Tuesday. Created by celebrated AI artist Refik Anadol, the piece — titled A Goal in Life: Messi x Refik Anadol — uses machine learning to reconstruct Messi’s iconic 2009 Champions League header in 3D, according to a report by The Athletic. The result is a mesmerising, immersive visualisation of a moment that defined a generation of football fans.

The goal, scored against Manchester United in the 70th minute of the final in Rome, saw the 5-foot-7 Messi rise improbably above Rio Ferdinand to meet a Xavi cross with a deft header, boot flying off in the process. “It’s rare for me,” Messi said in a previously unreleased interview. “That jump, the header—it was beautiful and unique. My favourite.”

Anadol spent weeks using AI to transform that memory into a digital artwork that feels both intimate and futuristic. The auction proceeds will go entirely to the Inter Miami CF Foundation, which will partner with UNICEF to support educational programmes across Argentina, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, and Haiti.

“This sale is a testament to the power of art, technology, and sport to create real-world impact,” said curator Ximena Caminos. The identity of the buyer remains undisclosed, but the piece has already become a talking point—not just for its artistry, but for its mission.
