Mark Zuckerberg says Meta AI now has 1 billion users, eyes monetisation and personalisation

Meta’s artificial intelligence assistant has officially crossed a major milestone: one billion monthly active users across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared the update during the company’s annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday, calling the AI tool a key pillar of Meta’s future.

This surge in usage follows the recent launch of a standalone Meta AI app in April. Despite the billion-user benchmark, Zuckerberg noted that the product is still in its growth phase. “It may seem kind of funny that a billion monthly actives doesn’t seem like it’s at scale for us, but that’s where we’re at,” he told shareholders.

The company’s near-term goal is to deepen user engagement through more personalised interactions, voice-based conversations, and entertainment features. Monetisation, however, is on the horizon. Zuckerberg floated the idea of either paid recommendations or a subscription model to unlock more compute power—similar to how OpenAI monetises ChatGPT.

This aligns with reports from earlier this year that Meta was preparing a subscription-based model for its AI service, potentially positioning it as a direct rival to other premium AI platforms.

Beyond AI, the meeting also addressed 14 proposals, nine of which were shareholder-driven. Issues ranged from child safety and emissions to content moderation. Proposal 8, submitted by JLens, called for a detailed annual report on hate speech and antisemitism—a response to Meta’s recent loosening of moderation policies. Early results suggest that proposals not backed by the board, including one to dismantle Meta’s dual-class share structure, are unlikely to pass.

The board-supported items, including the re-election of directors and an equity incentive plan, are expected to be approved. Final results will be published within four business days via Meta’s site and the SEC.
