If spending hours scrolling through Instagram, Reddit, or other social media feeds feels like your natural habitat, you might be in luck. A Mumbai-based startup, Monk Entertainment, is looking for a professional “doom-scroller”—someone whose job is basically to stay online, keep up with trends, and enjoy content for a living.
Viraj Sheth, co-founder and CEO of Monk Entertainment, recently made the announcement on social media, sparking curiosity and amusement among users. According to Sheth, the ideal candidate should spend at least six hours a day scrolling Instagram and following creator culture. But it’s not just about endless scrolling: applicants should be fluent in Hindi and English, have a sharp eye for social media trends, and be familiar with communities like Reddit’s InstaCelebsGossip.
Sheth encouraged candidates to show personality and humor in their application emails, explicitly asking them not to use ChatGPT. “Write to careers@monk-e.in with ‘doomscroller’ as the subject,” he said.
The post quickly went viral, with social media users flooding the comments. Many joked about being “overqualified” with their own hours of scrolling, while others were thrilled that their so-called “bad habit” could finally earn them money. Some questioned whether the role was real, but the attention it received shows just how much the internet values those who understand social media trends inside out.
This unusual job also reflects a larger shift in the digital world. Companies today increasingly see value in people who are deeply engaged with online culture, able to spot viral trends, and understand content that resonates with audiences. In other words, what was once a pastime or guilty habit is slowly becoming a skill worth paying for.
For anyone who spends hours doom-scrolling anyway, Monk Entertainment’s call could be a dream come true—turning endless Instagram scrolling into a paying profession.
