After years of waiting, it looks like Instagram might finally be working on an app for the iPad.According to a report by The Information, a company source has confirmed that the company is developing an iPad version of the app. If you’re an iPad user who’s ever tried scrolling through Instagram on the bigger screen, you probably know the current experience isn’t great — it’s just the stretched-out iPhone app, and it’s far from ideal.
Instagram launched all the way back in 2010, and in all this time, there’s never been a proper iPad version. Over the years, Instagram has made it clear that building an iPad app hasn’t been a priority. In 2020, the company’s head, Adam Mosseri, said they simply didn’t have enough staff for it. In 2022, he added that there just weren’t enough users asking for it to make it worthwhile.
But that may be changing now — and TikTok could be the reason. With a possible TikTok ban in the US on the horizon, Instagram seems to be stepping up its game to attract more creators and users. Just recently, it invited content creators to New York City to try a new video editing app called “Edits,” designed to replace TikTok’s popular CapCut.
Instagram is also tweaking its features to be more TikTok-like — extending Reels to three minutes and making small design changes to feel more familiar to short-form video fans.
There’s no official release date for the iPad app yet, and we don’t know much about how it’ll look or work. But if you’ve been hoping for a better Instagram experience on your iPad, this might finally be it.
