Instagram has introduced a feature called AI Voice Effects for voice notes in Direct Messages (DMs), allowing users to modify the sound of their recordings before sending them. The feature adds audio effects to voice messages while preserving the original tone, rhythm and emotion of the speaker.
The update expands how voice messages can be used in private conversations on the platform. Users can apply different styles to their recordings directly within the messaging interface before sharing them with contacts.

The AI Voice Effects feature lets users record a voice note and apply audio transformations before sending it in a DM conversation. The effects can change how the voice sounds by applying character-style filters while keeping the natural delivery of the message.
Instagram said the goal of the feature is to make voice-based conversations more expressive. The effects are integrated within the messaging composer, allowing users to preview different styles before sending the voice note.
The company has not specified the exact number of effects available at launch, but the feature is designed to provide multiple voice styles that can alter the character of the recording without distorting the clarity of the message.

Once a voice message with an effect is sent, recipients can see which effect was used in the message. Instagram has also introduced an interactive element that allows recipients to tap the effect label and apply the same style to their own reply.
This creates a chain of responses where users can continue conversations using similar voice transformations. The feature works directly inside DM chats and does not require additional tools or apps.
Instagram said the addition is part of its effort to expand the use of voice notes on the platform and introduce new ways for users to communicate in private conversations.
