Huawei may unveil its triple folding phone hours after Apple’s iPhone 16 event, as per a report by GSMArena. Huawei also reportedly disclosed the name of the triple foldable phone–Huawei Mate XT– in a new teaser video shared on Weibo. The ‘T’ in the Mate XT name could refer to “Triple” or “Tri-fold”.
The Chinese tech giant is reportedly going to unveil the Huawei Mate XT at an event in China on September 10–one day after Apple unveils the iPhone 16 series and the new Apple Watch–which would start at 2.30 PM China time (around 12 hours after the September 9 Apple event). If Huawei announces the Mate XT during the event, it would become the first company in the world to unveil a triple-folding phone, beating the likes of Samsung and Honor, who are also in the race.
In a post on Weibo, Huawei’s consumer technology head Richard Yu said that the company is set to launch an “innovative” and “disruptive” product. He said that Huawei had turned “science fiction into reality”.
The Huawei Mate XT has a 10-inch inner screen of three combined sections that fold back to resemble a regular smartphone; the Mate XT becomes thicker in a closed, unfolded state due to the three panels instead of a single display like your usual smartphone. The Huawei Mate XT features two hinges that help expand and conversely, fold the screen back.
Huawei also mentions Ultimate Design right next to the Mate XT name reveal in the teaser, a clear indication of the expensive price tag the Mate XT triple foldable phone is going to get owing to the company’s Ultimate Design brand. It can be assumed that the Huawei Mate XT will be more expensive than the Mate X3, which is priced close to $1,825 in China.
