Google may have plan to protect Android users from banking scams

Google is reportedly working on a new feature dubbed ‘BankScamCallDetectionService’ to protect against bank scams during screen sharing.

Google is reportedly working on a new bank scam call detection feature to combat the rising financial scams, where financial fraudsters pose as bank representatives, requesting screen sharing access to manipulate users into logging into their banking apps, and eventually stealing their money. Thankfully, with this protection feature against screen-sharing bank scams, Google seems to be introducing a more rigid shield for Android smartphone users.

How the feature will work

According to the report by Android Authority, Google is gearing up to combat scammers, who use screen sharing to dupe users with financial scams by introducing a feature, which is called ‘BankScamCallDetectionService.’ This purported feature was spotted in the APK teardown of the latest Google Play Services beta (v25.18.31), and it could be officially introduced in Android smartphones.

It aims to stop the most commonly used scams, where a call is received from an unknown number, and a banking app is opened in the foreground with screen sharing active. However, with this feature, Google will reportedly flash a big warning on the screen, allowing users to end the call or report the number.

While the feature is currently in the testing phase, the report adds that it is expected to roll out via Google Play Services soon. Moreover, it is different from the existing Scam Detection feature on Pixel phones as it will not work by listening to the phone calls and will rather trigger warnings when a financial fraud is being attempted.
