Google Maps gets Gemini integration, improved navigation and new Immersive view features

Google has updated the Maps app with a host of new features such as AI-driven features aimed at improving navigation and exploration through its platform. These updates leverage Google's Gemini models for location recommendations, curated ideas, and expanded Immersive View capabilities.

The Gemini-powered curation, Immersive View updates, and driving enhancements are available in the U.S., with certain features expanding globally. Enhanced navigation will roll out in over 30 metro areas next month, with plans for a wider release.

One of the main highlights of the recent Maps update is the addition of a Gemini-powered curation feature. The feature allows users to receive personalised location suggestions and answers to questions about destinations. In addition to this, users can ask Maps for activity ideas, such as “things to do with friends at night,” and receive curated results.

Additionally, review summaries generated by Gemini provide insights about destinations. The feature expands the utility of Maps as a planning tool by enabling users to inquire about specific details, such as outdoor seating or noise levels.

Google has also improved the Maps’ ability of route planning and navigation. Through the “add stops” feature, users can discover landmarks, dining spots, and scenic areas along their routes. Improved lane guidance helps drivers by highlighting lanes, crosswalks, and road signs, reducing confusion around turns, forks, and merges. Drivers can also report and view weather disruptions, such as flooded or unplowed roads, along their route. Arrival guidance now highlights parking areas near destinations and reminds users to save their parking location.

Immersive View has been expanded to 150 cities, including Brussels, Kyoto, and Frankfurt. Using AI and computer vision, Immersive View allows users to see real-time traffic and weather conditions at destinations. This includes new location categories like college campuses, aiding users in virtual exploration. Immersive View for routes now provides alerts for parking options and challenging turns.
