Google Maps has expanded its free usage limits for developers worldwide, including India. From March 1, 2025, developers will be granted free access to each of its products up to a monthly limit. This includes Maps, Routes, Places, and Environment APIs and SDKs. This move is aimed at developers to build more and contribute to Google Maps for free.
Google Maps comes with India-specific development support
Google has highlighted its decade-long support for developers in India by allowing Maps users to integrate and view various products like Places Nearby and Dynamic Street View without upfront costs. The platform covers over 7 million kilometers of roads, 300 million buildings, and 35 million businesses in the country currently.
The tech giant, via its new blog post, has also confirmed that it is taking these initiatives to make its mapping tools more accessible and support local innovation for developers of all sizes. Tina Weyand, senior director of Product Management, Google Maps Platform, stated that developers in India would be able to access up to $6,800 worth of free usage every month from March 2025.
This is a significant increase from the fixed $200 monthly credit currently offered by Google, as it has slashed prices by up to 70% on most of its API for Indian developers. The company has also assured developers that they can evaluate whether a new product is right for their business by integrating Dynamic Street View or Places Nearby to use as a proof of concept.
