Google Maps and Google Photos to soon get a new logo: Here's how they look

Google is redesigning the icons for two of its most-used services — Google Maps and Google Photos — as part of a wider effort to update its visual identity for the AI era. The redesigned icons feature a new gradient theme, following similar updates to the Google ‘G’ and Gemini logos earlier this year.

What’s changing
The new Google Maps icon retains the familiar pin shape but introduces a sleeker look with thinner lines and a larger inner circle. The previous diagonal partitions — which used two shades of blue — have been removed for a cleaner appearance. The update reflects Google’s recent integration of Gemini AI into Maps, particularly in place listings.
Meanwhile, the Google Photos icon maintains its signature pinwheel design but now includes a gradient effect that radiates from the center outward. While the center appears transparent when viewed at larger sizes, it is optimized for visibility as a small app icon.

Why the redesign
According to Google, the new gradient design represents “AI-driven innovation and creative energy” across its ecosystem. The company first introduced this visual direction with the redesigned Search app icon in May, replacing the traditional four solid color sections with a smooth gradient. By September, Google confirmed that this gradient “G” would symbolize “all of Google,” marking a unified brand identity across its products and platforms.

The refreshed look aims to align Google’s visual language with its evolving suite of AI-powered tools — such as Gemini, Ask Photos, and Veo — while keeping the brand recognizable through its four-color palette.

When to expect the update
Although Google has not officially confirmed rollout dates, the new icons for Google Maps and Photos are expected to appear soon across Android, iOS, and the web. The company plans to expand this design approach to more apps and services in the coming months as part of its ongoing transition to a gradient-driven design philosophy.
