In her first television interview since the 2024 presidential race, former US Vice President Kamala Harris opened up about life after politics, her upcoming book, and something that surprisingly set the internet buzzing, her refusal to use wireless earphones.
Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Harris chatted about her new memoir, 107 Days, which chronicles her brief campaign for the presidency after Joe Biden stepped out of the race. But while the book and her political journey were expected talking points, it was a casual comment about headphones that really grabbed attention.
It all started when Colbert shared a photo from her book, a candid shot of Harris making phone calls the day Biden announced he was stepping aside. She was at the vice president’s residence, juggling over 100 calls. What stood out? She was using wired headphones.
“I’ve been teased about this,” Harris said with a smile, holding up imaginary cords, “but I like these kinds of earpods that have the thing.”
Her reason? Safety and privacy.
Harris explained that she’s always been cautious when it comes to tech, especially after serving on the Senate Intelligence Committee. “I’ve been in classified briefings,” she said. “Don’t be on the train using your earpods, thinking somebody can’t listen to your conversation. I’m telling you, the ones with wires are a bit more secure.”
While most people don’t spend their days discussing top-secret matters, her words hit a nerve. Social media quickly picked up on it. One user joked, “You mean people can hear that I’m playing Phoebe Bridgers on repeat? Without my consent!?” Others took it more seriously, questioning how private our devices really are.
Wireless headphones work through Bluetooth, which is usually encrypted, but not foolproof. Harris seems to believe wired options offer a little more peace of mind and she’s not alone.
In an age where everything is smart, connected, and always listening, Harris’s low-tech choice feels oddly refreshing. Whether you agree with her or not, the moment sparked a rare kind of conversation — one about how much we’re willing to trade for convenience, and who might be listening on the other end.
