Wikipedia editors are facing serious threats from Elon Musk and Heritage foundation. They have accused them of bias and trying to expose their identities, according to a report by 404 media.
A leaked document from the Heritage Foundation reveals a plan to track Wikipedia editors using text analysis, hacked data, and even facial recognition software. They also suggest creating fake accounts to provoke reactions and gather information.
In response, Wikimedia is rolling out new security measures. One major change is the temporary accounts program, which will prevent unregistered editors’ IP addresses from being visible to the public. This makes it harder for bad actors to track them down. Wikimedia is also reducing how much user data it keeps and offering legal help to editors who face lawsuits for their contributions.
Wikimedia has warned that bad-faith lawsuits are being used to silence editors, especially in places where governments crackdown on free speech.
There’s even been talk of moving Wikimedia’s headquarters out of the US due to political pressure, but executives say it wouldn’t help much and would cost a fortune.
Despite all this, Wikimedia says it’s not backing down. “We’re paying close attention and doing everything we can to keep editors safe,” said CEO Maryana Iskander.
