Remember the Commandos games of the late nineties? The Commandos series of stealth-based real-time tactics games began in 1998 with ‘Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines’ and is making a comeback this year with Commandos: Origins. Here are 10 things you need to know about the new Commandos game:

1. Genre Commandos: Origins is a stealth-based 3D real-time tactics game like its predecessors where you control a team of Allied commandos in hostile territories.
2. Developer and publisher Commandos: Origins is developed by Darmstadt, Germany-based Claymore Game Studios and published by Kalypso Media Group.
3. Explore the origins of the crack team As can be guessed by the title, the real-time tactics game will explore the story of the origins of the commando unit featured in the franchise.
4. The six commandos Commandos: Origins features 6 playable characters: Jack O’Hara “the Green Beret”, Thomas “the Sapper” Hancock, Francis T. “the Sniper” Woolridge, Samuel “the Driver” Brooklyn, James “the Marine” Blackwood, and Rene “the Spy” Duchamp.
5. Gameplay Each commando in the unit comes with unique abilities which have to be strategically used. You can “sneak, climb, drive in various vehicles, or hide and creep your way to mission success”, said the developers in a post on Steam.
6. Over 10 missions to play Commandos Origins features more than 10 missions “in historically authentic WWII environments, spanning from the barren Arctic to the African desert”, said the developers. The missions feature a “range of core and voluntary objectives that will require your full tactical expertise”.
7. Game modes Commandos: Origins features a single-player as well as a 2-player online/local split-screen cooperative multiplayer mode.
8. Built for the modern gamer As per the developers, Commandos Origins comes with precise and intuitive controls to control the commandos. Players can “coordinate complex actions simultaneously to overcome heavily fortified targets”.
9. Platforms Commandos Origins is set to launch on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 Xbox Series X|S, PS4 and Xbox One.
10. Release date Commandos: Origins (digital game version) has a confirmed release date of April 9, 2025, on Windows PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It will launch on day one with Xbox Game Pass for console and PC. Retail game editions for Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will be available for purchase from May 22. The retail editions come with all the contents of the Commandos Origins Deluxe Edition.

PS4 and Xbox One players need to wait a little longer as the developers haven’t disclosed the release date of Commandos Origins (digital version) for these platforms though they plan for a 2025 release.
