Perplexity Comet is making strides in the browser space by offering more than just web browsing. The company has integrated AI tools natively into Comet to provide functionality that other browsers either don’t offer or only support through extensions. While Comet is rolling out to select users globally, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has sparked curiosity with a single question: Will people still be using Google Chrome five years from now?
Srinivas posted the question on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “Do you think you’ll still be using Chrome in 2030?” The post has garnered attention not just because it challenges Chrome’s long-standing dominance, but also because it comes at a time when Perplexity is actively positioning Comet as a smarter alternative.
Netizens weigh inThe post triggered varied responses from netizens. While some users expressed loyalty to Chrome and argued that it remains the fastest and most stable browser, others said they’ve already moved on to alternatives like Arc, Brave, or Safari — or are keen to try Comet.
One user wrote, “Only if Chrome becomes more helpful and transparent. Right now, it’s mostly just a container for Google ads.” Another replied, “If Perplexity keeps this pace, Chrome might genuinely have a problem by then.”
Some also pointed out the growing concern around Chrome’s dominance in ad tech and tracking, citing that privacy could be a deciding factor for users in the next half-decade.
Chrome still dominates, but questions are growingAs of 2025, Google Chrome continues to lead the browser market globally by a wide margin. But with rising competition from AI-native solutions and a broader shift in how people interact with the web, questions like the one posed by Srinivas are likely to become more common.
What makes Comet differentComet is pitched as the AI web browser and comes with Perplexity integrated right within it. This allows users to get a real-time answer and access to an AI tool directly in the browsing experience. That allows users to summarise pages, generate responses, or dive deeper into context without needing extra plug-ins. For some users, this is already beginning to reshape how they search or interact with information on the web.
But that’s not the only reason here. Most of these features are already there in Google Chrome , where it summarises, rewrites and even scans a PDF or document to answer users’ queries in real time. Comet also allows users to do different activities while browsing, more like Agentic browsing that becomes your so-called thinking cap and also performs certain tasks for you.
