OpenAI’s ChatGPT is currently facing widespread performance issues, particularly impacting paid users. According to the official OpenAI status page and third-party outage tracker Downdetector, there has been a significant spike in error reports and user complaints as of August 5, 2025.
What OpenAI said
OpenAI acknowledged the issue on its status page, confirming that some paid users are experiencing “elevated errors” during ChatGPT conversations. The incident was marked at 8:29 PM IST and categorized under "Degraded performance." The company stated that a mitigation plan is being implemented but did not provide a timeline for full resolution.

What Downdetector shows
Downdetector, which tracks real-time outages using user-submitted data, also reported a sharp spike in error reports around 8:00 PM IST. The number of problem reports surged from a baseline of 14 to over 400 within minutes. A large majority—87 percent—of these complaints were related specifically to ChatGPT, while 8 percent were tied to the app and 5 percent to the website.
User impact
The issue appears to be affecting various paid tiers of ChatGPT users, many of whom rely on consistent access for professional and academic use. The elevated errors may prevent users from starting new chats, loading existing conversations, or accessing advanced features tied to paid subscriptions.
What’s next
OpenAI has not yet issued a detailed update on the cause of the disruption or when normal service will be restored. The company is currently monitoring the issue and working on mitigation steps.
