ChatGPT is giving social media giants a serious run for their money. According to data from Similarweb, the ChatGPT app was downloaded over 29.5 million times on iPhones worldwide in the past 28 days. To put that into perspective, the combined downloads for TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) during the same period were about 32.8 million.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reacted to this milestone with a post on X, praising his team for keeping up with the massive growth. “Our engineering and compute teams do incredible work to rapidly scale to meet customer demand for ChatGPT,” he wrote. “A lot of blood, sweat and tears go into this, and they make it look relatively easy. I have never seen a team handle a 2.5-year sprint with such grace!”
ChatGPT’s explosive growth highlights how AI tools are becoming a part of daily life for millions worldwide not just for work but also for learning, content creation, and entertainment.
What’s striking is that a single AI app is now nearly matching the combined pull of four of the world’s biggest social media platforms. That’s a major shift in how people are spending their time online.
While social media still dominates in total user base, this surge shows that AI-powered tools like ChatGPT are no longer just tech trends, they’re quickly becoming everyday essentials.
