Apple has hit out at Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, for access to its software tools, claiming that allowing such access could jeopardize users' privacy and security. The Cupertino-based tech giant recently released a white paper titled ‘It’s Getting Personal,’ which explores the potential rulings of the European Union’s (EU) Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates major tech companies like Apple to permit app developers to utilize its services and tools.
Apple raises concerns over Meta’s repeated privacy requests: Key details
According to a report by Reuters, Apple has stated that Meta has submitted 15 interoperability requests so far, more than any other company, seeking extensive access to Apple's technology. The company argues that these requests exceed what is necessary for any app developer and could potentially grant Meta access to highly sensitive user data, including messages, emails, phone calls, photos, files, and passwords.
However, in response, Meta has rejected Apple’s claims and added that these excuses have been made by the company to evade compliance with the EU regulations. The EU is also currently examining the issue, having published preliminary findings on how Apple must comply with the DMA’s interoperability provisions. A final decision regarding Apple's compliance with the new regulations is expected to be made by March next year.
Further, the European Commission has also given stakeholders until January 9 to provide feedback on its proposed measures to ensure greater compatibility between Apple and its rivals. However, in the past, Apple has been warned by the Commission to open access to features such as its notifications system to work with devices from other companies, including Meta's popular services such as VR headsets.
