Apple’s transition to OLED displays on the MacBook Pro may be accelerating, if a new supply-chain rumour is accurate. A report from leaker yeux1122 suggests that Samsung Display has already started mass production of its 8.6-generation OLED panels, earlier than earlier industry expectations.
Until now, most reports had pointed to a late 2026 launch window for the first OLED MacBook Pro models. Samsung Display was widely believed to begin producing these panels in the second quarter of 2026. An earlier production start raises the possibility that Apple could pull forward its release plans, even if only slightly.
The leaker claims these panels are specifically intended for the MacBook Pro, aligning with previous reports that Apple has signed an exclusive agreement with Samsung Display for this generation of OLED technology. Apple has not commented on the claims.
OLED is already used in Apple’s M5 iPad Pro, where it delivers deeper blacks, higher contrast, and more vibrant colours compared to LCD and mini-LED displays. Bringing the technology to the MacBook Pro would mark one of the most significant display upgrades in years and could give users a clearer incentive to upgrade from older models.
There is also renewed speculation that an OLED MacBook Pro could introduce touch input. Some reports suggest the panels may be On-Cell Touch AMOLED (OCTA) displays, a technology Samsung Display has publicly discussed. While Apple has long resisted touchscreen Macs, OLED hardware would remove one of the technical barriers.
Other rumours tied to the new display technology include a smaller camera cutout. Instead of the current notch, Apple could move to a pin-hole-style design, similar to what is frequently rumoured for future iPhones.
It is worth noting that yeux1122 has a mixed track record when it comes to Apple leaks. That said, the timeline broadly fits with known OLED development schedules and Samsung Display’s manufacturing roadmap, making the rumour plausible, if far from confirmed.
