For years, Apple users have been using the CarPlay infotainment service to mirror their iPhone’s screen on their automobiles. The tech giant was supposed to launch the successor to it before the end of last year, but clearly, Apple ran out of time. Now, nearly a month into 2025, it appears that Apple has finally updated its CarPlay website to remove any mention of supposed CarPlay 2 coming in 2024 as it prepares for a 2025 launch.
Apple CarPlay confirmed to be in development: Key details
Apple first previewed its next-generation CarPlay at WWDC 2022, and there are still signs that it might eventually launch at some point this year. In a statement given to 9to5Mac, the company reassured users that it’s still working with automakers to deliver it. There are references to next-generation CarPlay in the latest iOS 18.3 update released last month, and Apple has recently filed new patents for supposed CarPlay 2 in the EU database.
The company also added that “Each car brand will share more details as they near the announcements of their models that will support the next generation of CarPlay.” This confirms that Apple is working with various automakers to bake the system into their cars and connect it to the respective features.
Apple has till now not provided any timeframe for CarPlay 2’s release, and given the multiple delays, we can expect it to launch in the second half of 2025. The Cupertino-based giant has also confirmed that it would have deep integration with the vehicle’s instrument cluster and climate controls with support for multiple displays across the dashboard.
