OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company, is gearing up for a significant funding round that could value it at over $100 billion. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, two of the biggest tech companies in the world may join in this investment funding round. The report suggests that Apple and Nvidia are looking to invest in OpenAI. One of the biggest investors in OpenAI is Microsoft.
Apple’s rumoured interest doesn’t come out of the blue. In June 2024 at its annual developer conference, Apple unveiled a slew of AI features called Apple Intelligence. OpenAI’s ChatGPT will power some of those features.
Earlier this year, senior Apple executive Phil Schiller was set to join OpenAI’s board as an observer in a non-voting role. However, Schiller didn’t take the position because of anti-trust concerns.
As far as Nvidia is concerned, its reported investment also wouldn’t come as a surprise. Nvidia is a key supplier of chips that help power OpenAI’s foundational models.
The report also reveals that the next round of OpenAI’s funding is being led by Thrive Capital. It could value OpenAI at more than $100 billion.
