Truth be told, I am not that active a gamer as I used to be or I would like to be. Still, there are times when I do download some of the latest games — or some popular old favorites — to see what’s new out there. With the iPhone 16 Pro Max, gaming has been a far better experience than it was on previous iPhones. A lot of it is down to iOS 18’s new Game Mode and the upgraded A18 Pro chip. Some of all-time favorites are games in the sports genres, especially football. Football games require precise timing, smooth frame rates, and responsive controls, so I wanted to see how well Apple’s latest hardware and software improvements would enhance the experience.
Smooth operator
From the moment I launched Konami’s eFootball, I noticed how smooth everything felt. The new 6-core GPU, which Apple claims is 20% faster, was evident in how quickly the game loaded and how seamless the animations looked. The player movements, passing, and shooting felt more fluid, and there was no noticeable lag, even when playing for long sessions.

Apple has added hardware-accelerated ray tracing but on the 16 Pro Max, it is twice as fast as before. In practical terms, this meant that stadium lighting, shadows, and reflections on the pitch looked much more realistic. Do keep in mind that it’s not possible to feel this effect in all games. But in eFootball, the way light bounced off players and the wet grass after a virtual rain shower added an extra level of depth that I hadn’t seen before on an iPhone, or for that matter any other smartphone.
Game Mode does make a difference
With Game Mode enabled, the experience felt even more refined. Apple designed Game Mode in iOS 18 to prioritse gaming performance, and in eFootball, I could really see the difference. The frame rate stayed consistent throughout the match, even during fast transitions, quick counterattacks, and some rather crazy — and dare I say, embarrassing — goalmouth scrambles.

I also noticed that wireless accessories felt more responsive. I usually connect my DualSense controller for a better console-like experience, and with Game Mode, there was practically no input lag. Every pass, dribble, and shot felt as close to instant as I could expect on a mobile platform. Paired it with my AirPods Pro and the latency was reduced, making in-game commentary and crowd noise feel more in sync with the action.
A cool customer
When it comes to mobile gaming, some of the best models out there at times struggle with how hot the device gets and how fast the battery drains. I played three full 10-minute matches back-to-back, and while the iPhone 16 Pro Max did warm up slightly, it never got uncomfortably hot. Battery life also held up well—after about 50 minutes of gameplay, I lost roughly 13% battery, which seems reasonable given the intensity of the graphics and the online connectivity required.

Games people play
The faster GPU, improved ray tracing, and lower latency for wireless accessories made a noticeable difference. The game felt smoother, more responsive, and visually impressive without draining the battery too quickly or causing overheating issues.
While it may not replace a full gaming console, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is now closer than ever to delivering a high-quality gaming experience.
