Car theft is a big problem everywhere. While you can do very little to prevent it, Denver police are giving away free AirTags and Samsung SmartTags to help people in tracking their stolen cars.

As per a Gizmodo report, the Denver Police has partnered with the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA) to hand out 450 AirTags and Samsung SmartTags to residents who sign up for the DenverTrack program.

How it works

The AirTag cannot stop a thief from taking away your car, but it can help you find your car if it gets stolen. Place the tracker in your car, connect it to your phone, and use the Find My or SmartThings app to track it.

If your car is stolen, you’ll be responsible for sharing the location with the police—they won’t have direct access to the tracker.

Why this matters

AirTags weren’t made for security, but people have used them to recover stolen cars, bikes, and even luggage. If thieves know cars might be tracked, they may think twice before stealing one.

How can you get one

If you live in Denver, you can sign up on the city’s website to get a free tracker. It’s an easy way to add an extra layer of protection for your car.
