Google is set to give Android its boldest makeover in years with the rollout of Material 3 Expressive, a sweeping visual overhaul that deepens the personalisation promise of Android. The update, revealed ahead the Android Show event, enhances both aesthetics and usability—making phones feel even more tailored, responsive, and delightfully alive.

Mindy Brooks, VP of Product Management and User Experiences,  Android Platform, said that at the heart of Material 3 Expressive is a design philosophy rooted in individuality. Building on the foundation of Material You, which first launched in 2021, the new update unlocks richer customization options. Users can now fine-tune color palettes, adjust dynamic themes across Google apps like Gmail and Fitbit, and personalize typography and layout elements—all to reflect their unique style.

But this isn’t just about pretty pixels. Google is dialing up interactivity across the board. Animations have become more springy and lifelike: swipe away a notification, and others subtly react in a coordinated ripple; fling down the notification shade, and a soft blur kicks in for depth without distraction. The haptic feedback, too, has been refined—giving a satisfying rumble when dismissing apps or adjusting settings.

Google has also reimagined utility elements with modern flair. The Quick Settings panel is now more customisable, letting users pack in frequently used actions like Flashlight or Do Not Disturb. Notifications, long a cluttered battleground, are better organized to surface what matters most.

A standout addition is Live Updates, a feature that transforms progress notifications into real-time, glanceable cards. Whether tracking a food delivery, following a rideshare, or watching a package en route, these updates remain visible without being intrusive—one more way Android is becoming smarter at staying out of your way.

Material 3 Expressive marks a major step in Google’s quest to make Android not just usable, but deeply personal. “Material 3 Expressive gives you new ways to show your style and personality, delivers smooth interactions and surfaces glanceable, helpful information,” said Brooks.
