2025 seems to have started off on a bad note for some Amazon employees as the company has revealed it is eliminating some roles. According to a report by Bloomberg, the tech giant is laying off employees from its communications and sustainability teams.
“Following a recent review, we’re making some changes to the Communications & Corporate Responsibility organisation to help us move faster, increase ownership, strengthen our culture, and bring teams closer to customers,” Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser told Bloomberg. “As part of these changes, we’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles. We don’t make these decisions lightly, and we’re committed to supporting affected employees through their transitions,” Glasser added.
It is not clear how many employees have been laid off but the Bloomberg report mentions that dozens of roles have been eliminated.
A report by CNBC quotes an internal memo sent to Amazon staff by Drew Herdener, head public relations and corporate responsibility, at Amazon. In the memo, Herdener said that the company had identified some roles that were too narrowly scoped or that introduced unnecessary layers. “To address this and do the right thing for the business, we’re eliminating a small number of roles in Communications and Sustainability. This is a difficult decision to make and one that my leadership team and I do not take lightly,” he told employees.
Herdener stated that while some employees may be rehired in lower-level positions, others will see their roles redistributed to different departments within the company. He also emphasized that Amazon will offer financial assistance, extended benefits, and job placement support to those affected by the layoffs.
