OpenAI's vice president Srinivas Narayanan on July 3 said that making access to ChatGPT more affordable and increasing support for Indian languages are the top priorities for the company in India.
Narayanan, addressing the keynote panel India AI: Large Language Models at the Global India AI Summit 2024, said, "Language and cost are top of mind for OpenAI. We have received a lot of feedback from the Indian community, and GPT 4o was developed to address this feedback."
“We made the price of using AI a lot cheaper and that has opened up access. We are now offering the best models in our free tiers. A lot more people are able to experience the best of our products,” he added.
Narayanan also said that this decrease in cost has brought down the expenses for developers in developing new applications.
Regarding the improvement of support for Indian languages, Narayanan said that the company has improved datasets and tokenisers.
“In India, we are using 3 times fewer tokenisers than before. That is additional cost saving,” he added.
Narayanan also said that OpenAI is open to assisting India and its AI mission. "We are here to help India and its AI mission. We are excited about the application development initiative. OpenAI is ready to help in any possible way, whether it's providing access to models, and more," he added.
