In addition to his illustrious tennis career, Vijay Amritraj also made a mark in the world of cinema. He famously played the role of MI6 agent Vijay in the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy, and later appeared as a starship captain in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986).
When asked about what drives him and fuels his desire for constant improvement, the tennis legend offered a compelling and inspiring response.
“The excitement of challenges is what keeps me going. When you're challenged, you strive to become better,” said Vijay Amritraj, former Indian tennis star at Rising Bharat Summit 2025.
Amritraj's remarkable contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri in 1983. He has also been recognized by both the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Tennis Federation.
Amritraj had a professional tennis career spanning from 1970 to 1993. In doubles, he frequently teamed up with his brother Anand. He reached his highest singles ranking of world No. 18 in July 1980 and attained a career-high doubles ranking of No. 23 in March 1980. Over the course of his career, he captured 16 singles titles and 14 doubles titles.
