Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following her disqualification from the 50 kg women's freestyle wrestling final at the Paris Olympics. Phogat was due to contest the gold medal match against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States when she was disqualified for exceeding the weight limit. The disqualification occurred on Wednesday after Phogat was found to be 100 grams over the weight limit during the weigh-in.
Now as per multiple media reports, the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has accepted Vinesh Phogat’s appeal asking for a joint silver medal. However, the verdict is not out yet, and is expected in the next 24 to 48 hours.
Phogat reached the final by defeating Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals. The disqualification has prompted reactions from the Indian Olympic Association, with President PT Usha expressing shock. Usha confirmed that while Phogat is physically and medically fine, she is deeply disheartened. "After hearing the news that Vinesh Phogat is disqualified, I am shocked and disappointed. I had come here to meet Vinesh; she is physically and medically okay. Mentally, she is disappointed. Our support staff is with her, trying their best to help her reduce weight," Usha said.
India has won three bronze medals at the Paris Olympics so far, all in shooting. The country narrowly missed additional medals, finishing fourth in events such as the 10m air rifle, 25m pistol, skeet team, badminton singles, and mixed archery team events. The outcome of Phogat's appeal will be closely watched as India look to enhance its medal tally.
