Afghanistan have knocked England out of the Champions Trophy 2025 with a 8-run win at the Gaddifi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday (February 26).
Azmatullah Omarzai was key for Afghanistan as he took five wickets after contributing with the bat as well in the first innings.
Earlier, Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran slammed 177 runs, his highest one-day total, and shared a 103-run partnership with skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi.
The duo helped their side post a massive 325 for 7 against a listless England in their Champions Trophy match on Wednesday.
Zadran notched up his total off 146 deliveries, while Shahidi struck 40 off 67 balls after Afghanistan were left struggling at 37 for 3 in the ninth over.
Zadran also shared a 72-run stand for the fifth wicket with Azmatullah Omarzai (41 off 31 balls) and a 111-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Mohammad Nabi (40 off 24 balls) while building the strong total.
Coming to England's bowling, pacer Jofra Archer accounted for the top-order, returning figures of 3/64 in his 10 overs.
England made just one change, bringing Jamie Overton in place of injured Brydon Carse, while Afghanistan remained unchanged.
Root and Duckett kept England in the hunt with a steady partnership, but Duckett’s dismissal shifted momentum.
Brook and Buttler got promising starts but couldn’t convert, allowing Afghanistan to claw their way back. When Root eventually fell, Archer provided a late spark with some boundaries, briefly tilting the game in England’s favor.
However, Overton’s rash shot to long-on proved costly. In the end, Farooqi and Azmatullah held their nerve to seal a thrilling win for Afghanistan.

India are trailing by 193 runs but the effort by the duo have certainly raised India's hopes of saving the match. Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja scored 77, while KL Rahul, for whom this tour has been some sort of redemption, made 84. The all-rounder was removed by Cummins, who also dismissed Nitish Reddy for 16(61). Together the pair added 53 runs for the seventh wicket. Rahul was dismissed by Nathan Lyon, courtesy to an absolute blinder by Steve Smith at slips. Smith had earlier dropped Rahul on the first ball of the day. Rahul and Jadeja added 67 runs for the sixth wicket after Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 10. The Indian skipper and Rahul had resumed the proceedings from the overnight score of 51/4, when India were trailing by 394 runs.

While rain must have generated mixed reactions, at least for Indian fans, the action on the field completely belonged to the hosts. After posting a gigantic 445 on the board in first innings, the Australian pace battery led by Mitchell Starc didn't take long to make quick injections. He was soon joined by teammate Josh Hazlewood as despite the several rain interruptions India find themselves reeling at 55/4, trailing by 394 runs at Stumps. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma are batting in the middle, with the former adding 33 out of the total runs India scored. India's top-order comprising Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli was packed for single-digit scores by Starc and Hazlewood. Things got more difficult as Pat Cummins joined the party and dismissed Rishabh Pant for 9. Earlier, Australia didn't waste much time and looked for boundaries from the word go. The pair of Starc and Alex Carey combined to hit two fours and a six after resuming proceedings from the overnight score of 405/7. Carey in the process also went to complete his half-century but Starc was dismissed for 18 by Jasprit Bumrah, which took his wicket tally to six in the innings. Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep then scalped a wicket each as Australia's first innings was folded at 445. Carey was the final batter to be dismissed for 70.
