India vs Pakistan is set to take place on June 9 in T20 World Cup 2024

That India and Pakistan no longer play bilateral cricket adds intrigue to their face-offs in multi-nation tournaments. The Asian giants will square off against each other in the ongoing T20 World Cup in New York on Sunday. India comfortably won their first game against Ireland, while Pakistan suffered a Super Over upset against the United States. But India-Pakistan is a different game and here are the players to watch out for...

India

Virat Kohli: He got out cheaply against Ireland, but every time he plays against Pakistan, Kohli brings his A-game. The T20 World Cup match in Melbourne two years ago is still fresh in everyone’s minds, where the former India captain almost single-handedly took his team over the line. Against Pakistan, he has 488 runs in 10 T20Is. And he has almost always made himself big on the grand occasion.

Rohit Sharma: Even on a treacherous Nassau County International Cricket Stadium pitch, the India captain scored a half-century against Ireland before retiring hurt. Rohit Sharma has changed his batting approach, and it would be interesting to see how he counters the two Pakistan left-arm quicks, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Amir. A good start from him will make the job easier for India.

Suryakumar Yadav: The best T20I batsman in the world, Surya brings his 360-degree cricket to the table. He is one player who can do the unexpected. Maybe, on a tricky pitch, Surya will have to mix caution with aggression. But if he dominates the middle overs, the game would be India’s to lose.

Jasprit Bumrah: The world’s best fast bowler across formats, Bumrah won the Player of the Match award against Ireland, claiming 2-6 in his three overs. In that game, however, he didn’t bowl with the new ball. But against Pakistan, in all likelihood, he will take the new ball. Pakistan’s opening duo of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan form the cream of their batting. Rohit would be tempted to use Bumrah upfront.

Pakistan

Babar Azam: The Pakistan captain is under pressure, especially after his team’s defeat to the USA. Babar also doesn’t have a very good record against India in this format – 92 runs in four games. But he is a top-quality batsman in his own right and a decent contribution from him could put his team in a good position on an unpredictable pitch.

Mohammad Rizwan: His 79 not out off 55 balls and an unbroken 152-run opening stand with Babar saw Pakistan secure a 10-wicket win over India at the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai. Conditions in New York would be entirely different, but from Pakistan’s perspective, Rizwan needs to rise to the challenge.

Shaheen Shah Afridi: Left-arm quicks bringing the ball into the batsman trouble Rohit. He bowled a beauty to account for the India opener three years ago. He would like to do the same on Sunday.

Mohammad Amir: After coming back to international cricket following a four-year hiatus, Amir is yet to reach his peak. He bowled well in patches against the US. Pakistan would hope that the senior fast bowler finds the form of the 2017 Champion Trophy final, when he ran through India’s top order.
