The BCCI selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, on Tuesday revealed India's Asia Cup 2025 team, which has drawn criticism. Shubman Gill was named vice-captain and notable exclusions include Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Former India cricketer Madan Lal commented on the current team announcement and expressed astonishment, particularly at Jaiswal's absence.
The committee's choice about Hardik Pandya was also questioned by the 1983 World Cup winner. The all-rounder has been included in the squad but was note considered as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy for the continental showdown. But it isn’t a new development as the last time Pandya was the vice-captain it was at the 2024 World Cup.

Speaking to ANI, Lal said: “Sometimes you feel surprised that a player like Yashasvi Jaiswal is not in the team...I don't know why Hardik Pandya has been removed.”
“But Gill is a good choice as he is performing well. In the coming time, it is possible that Gill will play in all three formats. The players who make the team win a match must not be left out. ..We have such a good team that we may win the Asia Cup,” he added.
Jaiswal, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel have all been added to the standby list.
The 2025 Asia Cup will take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9–28. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who have been a formidable opening duo in T20Is in the recent past are part of the 15-member squad. However, Gill's inclusion — who is now anticipated to open for India — raises doubts about Samson's ability to start in the playing XI.
