From R Ashwin's record smashing spree in 2024 to KL Rahul's IPL journey with the Lucknow Super Giants - a roundup of cricket news in Q1

The Indian Premier League arrived early in 2024. IPL 2024 started soon after the second Women's Premier League concluded in a maiden victory for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise. The WPL in turn started on the heels of India's very successful campaign against England in the 5-Test series from January - March 2024. It has been a packed cricket calendar for players and viewers this year. A look back at key events from the first quarter.

Cricket 2024 began with R Ashwin surpassing Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh's records, and claiming the 500th Test wicket of his career.

Cricket 2024 began with R Ashwin surpassing Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh's records, and claiming the 500th Test wicket of his career.

  1. WPL 2024: After snatching victory from the jaws of defeat in the season opener against the Delhi Capitals, Harmanpreet Kaur's Mumbai Indians will be keen to maintain the winning streak against Gujarat Giants, led by Beth Mooney.

2. Ravichandran Ashwin (5/51) derailed the English batters with his variations of sliders, carrom ball and classical off-spinners on a wicket where the ball kept low. Erudite bowler Ravichandran Ashwin read the behaviour of the surface and tried to generate extra bounce by adding more power in his release on certain occasions.

3. R Ashwin's five-wicket haul in the fourth Test against England took him to 354 Test wickets claimed in India, breaking Anil Kumble's record (350) for most Test wickets in India. He also beat Harbhajan Singh's record for most wickets by an Indian bowler against a single team at home - R. Ashwin took 91 wickets, versus Harbhajan Singh's 86 against Australia.

4. Dhruv Jurel (39*) continued his golden touch to stitch a 72-run partnership with Shubman Gill (52*) to guide India to series victory in the fourth Test against England in Ranchi

5. Rohit Sharma, on Monday, became the first captain to register a series-win against England in the Bazball era. The term, coined by the media to define England's ultra-aggressive approach in Test cricket under coach Brendon McCullum, whose nickname is Baz, is now under scanner.

6. Rohit Sharma expressed satisfaction with the young and hungry-to-prove-themselves players who got their break during the January-March 2024 India - England five-Test series. He told the media: "Jin logon ko bhookh hai, hum unhi logon ko mauka denge." (We'll only give opportunities to those who're hungry to perform.)

7. In the Instagram post, Andhra cricketer Hanuma Vihari wrote that he had a run-in with a player during the first match. According to Vihari, the player complained to his father, a politician, who pressured the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) to take action against the international batter. "I was the captain in the first game against Bengal, and during the game, I shouted at the 17th player, and he complained to his dad, a politician. His dad, in return, asked the association to take action against me. Although we chased 410 against Bengal for a first-innings lead, I was asked to resign from captaincy without any fault of mine."

8. BCCI shared updates on the health of KL Rahul who had suffered a quadricep injury early in the Test series as well as Mohammed Shami who underwent a heel surgery on February 26, 2024. "Mohd. Shami successfully underwent a surgery on 26th February, 2024 for his right heel problem. He is recovering well and will soon head to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru to commence his rehabilitation process," the BCCI media advisory said.

9. Kolkata Knight Riders are at the No. 2 spot on the IPL 2024 Point Table, as of April 23. KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar had set up a temporary training facility in Mumbai on the sidelines of the DY Patil T20 Cup, ahead of the main pre-season camp with the full contingent will begin on March 15. India internationals Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, Chetan Sakariya and Varun Chakravarthy attended the sessions by Nayar, along with domestic cricketers Suyash Sharma, Anukul Roy, Vaibhav Arora, Sakib Hussain and Ramandeep Singh.

10. KL Rahul's IPL journey was cut-short in 2023 when he injured his thigh while fielding against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He appeared in only nine matches before undergoing a surgery. Ahead of the 2024 campaign, the Lucknow Super Giants skipper returned from London just in the nick of time, after receiving treatment for a quadricep injury sustained during the memorable 2024 India-England Test series.
