The Delhi Capitals have named Axar Patel as their captain for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The seasoned Indian all-rounder becomes the 14th player to lead the franchise, joining an esteemed list of both Indian and international stars who have taken on the role.

"It is my absolute honour to captain the Delhi Capitals, and I'm deeply grateful to our owners and support staff for placing their faith in me," Axar said in a statement.

"I've grown as a cricketer and a human being during my time here at the Capitals, and I feel ready and confident to lead this side going forward."

Axar also played a key role in India's Champions Trophy win earlier this month, taking five wickets at a rate of 4.35 and making key contributions batting at number five.

Axar faces the challenge of steering the Capitals toward their elusive first IPL title. The team is entering a new era, having moved on from Rishabh Pant’s leadership. Among past captains, Virender Sehwag remains the most successful, securing 28 wins and 24 losses in his 52-match tenure as skipper.

With a revamped squad featuring fresh talent and international stars, the Delhi Capitals will be eager to make their mark this season. However, the true test lies in whether Axar can rise to the demands of IPL captaincy.

Though new to leading an IPL side, Axar has prior captaincy experience, having guided Gujarat in domestic T20 competitions. He has captained the state team in 16 matches, winning 10 and losing 6.

Delhi Capitals will kick off their campaign against the Lucknow Super Giants at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam on March 24 (Monday).
