Shankar, a 29-year-old African elephant at Delhi Zoo, passed away today, despite veterinary efforts. The elephant, long a focus of rehabilitation efforts by animal welfare activists, refused food and collapsed, dying within 40 minutes. The elephant died on Wednesday, after enduring 24 years in captivity, including at least 13 years in solitary confinement.

Who was 'Shankar'?

He was originally one of two African elephants brought to India in 1998 as a diplomatic gift from Zimbabwe to former President Shankar Dayal Sharma. His companion died in 2001. Afterwards Shankar was shifted with Asian elephants which was a failed attempt. This results in Shankar's aggression which left him isolated.

Impact on Behaviour and Welfare

Observers noted that Shankar’s behaviour changed drastically after losing his companion. In his early years, he never accepted other elephants’ company and became friendless. In 2012, he was moved to a new enclosure that left him virtually alone, in violation of a 2009 federal ban on keeping elephants alone for more than six months.

Public Opinion and Activist Concerns

Visitors adored Shankar, who was known for his friendly demeanor and playful personality. His death has reminded many people of the plight of elephants in captivity and ignited renewed demands to be able to provide them with good care, socialisation and the ability to thrive.
