Yulla Kanda in Himachal Pradesh is a spiritually significant trekking destination located in the Kinnaur district. Known for its serene landscapes and divine energy, Yulla Kanda is home to the world’s highest Krishna temple, beautifully positioned at the centre of a sacred lake. The trek attracts devotees, nature lovers, and adventure seekers who want to experience the unmatched beauty of the Kinnaur mountains.

Where Is Yulla Kanda?

Situated at an altitude of around 3,895 metres (12,000 ft), Yulla Kanda lies in the Rora Valley of Kinnaur. The nearest village is Urni, and the total trek distance is approximately 12 km. The best time to visit Yulla Kanda is between May and October, when the weather is more favourable and the trails are accessible.

The Trek to Yulla Kanda

The journey begins from Yulla Khas, a small cultural village famous for its pristine environment and delicious Kinnauri apples. As the trail climbs upward, trekkers are greeted with spectacular Himalayan views, dense forests, and peaceful surroundings. The trek is not just scenic but deeply spiritual, drawing devotees who wish to offer prayers at the ancient Krishna temple.

The World’s Highest Krishna Temple

The most striking feature of Yulla Kanda is the Krishna temple built in the middle of the lake. According to sacred stories, the Pandavas created this lake during their exile, and the temple was constructed soon after. Its remote location and high altitude make it a rare and divine pilgrimage site.

A special aspect of this temple is its openness, people of all faiths and backgrounds are welcomed warmly, reflecting the inclusive culture of the region.

Historical Beliefs and Local Traditions

Yulla Kanda is also believed to be connected to the Bushahr dynasty. King Kehari Singh is said to have initiated the grand Janmashtami celebrations that continue across the region. Another local belief adds a mystical charm:

Residents place an inverted Kinnauri cap in the lake. If the cap floats across smoothly, it is considered a sign of good fortune, peace, and prosperity for the year ahead.

Devotion and Pilgrimage

Although remote, Yulla Kanda witnesses large gatherings during Janmashtami. Devotees and villagers come together to celebrate Lord Krishna's birth, perform rituals, and walk around the lake to seek forgiveness and inner peace.

The combination of natural beauty, spiritual energy, and ancient history makes Yulla Kanda a truly unique Himalayan pilgrimage experience.
