Yama Deepam 2025: Date, Time and Significance

Yama Deepam 2025: Yama Deepam 2025 will be observed on Saturday, October 18, 2025, coinciding with Dhantrayodashi or Dhanteras. According to the Hindu Panchang, the Trayodashi Tithi begins at 12:18 PM on October 18 and ends at 01:51 PM on October 19, 2025. The Yama Deepam Sayan Sandhya Muhurat will last from 05:09 PM to 06:23 PM, with a duration of 1 hour and 15 minutes.

During this auspicious evening time, devotees light a Deepak (lamp) outside their homes, dedicated to Lord Yama, the God of death. This sacred act, known as Deepdan for Yamaraj, is performed to seek protection from untimely or accidental deaths within the family.

Yama Deepam 2025: Significance

The observance of Yama Deepam holds deep spiritual importance in Hindu tradition. The lamp lit for Lord Yama symbolizes light conquering darkness and life overcoming fear. As part of the Diwali rituals, it is believed that the glow of this lamp wards off negativity and brings peace, longevity, and safety to family members.

Lighting the Yama Deepam on Trayodashi Tithi, during Sandhya Kaal (evening twilight), is said to please Lord Yama. According to Hindu beliefs, those who perform this ritual with devotion are blessed with protection against premature death and ill fate.

Yama Deepam 2025: Rituals and Puja Vidhi

The Yama Deepam is placed at the entrance or the southern side of the house — the direction associated with Lord Yama. A small earthen lamp filled with oil or ghee is lit and offered with prayers. Devotees chant Yama mantras or offer silent prayers, expressing gratitude for life and seeking blessings for their loved ones.

This ritual, though simple, carries a profound message of faith and protection. Lighting the Yama Deepam signifies respect for the cosmic balance of life and death and serves as a reminder of the impermanence of existence.

Connection Between Yama Deepam and Dhanteras

The festival of Yama Deepam coincides with Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi, the first day of the five-day Diwali celebrations. While Dhanteras is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Dhanvantari, Yama Deepam is performed for Lord Yama, marking a unique blend of prosperity and protection.

According to scriptures, lighting the Yama Deepam on Dhanteras evening ensures that divine blessings of both wealth and safety enter the household. Hence, this day is often regarded as one of the most spiritually balanced days of the year.

In various parts of India, it is said that the flame of the Yama Deepam keeps negative energies and evil influences away. Families light lamps not only for prosperity but also to maintain harmony and health throughout the coming year.

The act of offering light to Yamaraj reflects humility before divine justice and a wish for a long, peaceful life. Over generations, this ritual has remained a vital part of Diwali’s deeper spiritual essence.
