Vat Savitri Vrat 2025 Date: Know when and why it is celebrated?

Vat Savitri Vrat is a significant Hindu festival observed by married women for the long life and well-being of their husbands. This vrat holds deep cultural and spiritual importance across India, with variations in the date of observance depending on regional lunar calendars. In 2025, Vat Savitri Amavasya will fall on Monday, May 26, while Vat Savitri Purnima Vrat will be observed on Tuesday, June 10. Understanding these dates and the reason behind the festival helps devotees celebrate this sacred day with full devotion.

What is Vat Savitri Vrat?

Vat Savitri Vrat is a fasting ritual performed by married Hindu women who pray for the health, prosperity, and longevity of their husbands. The vrat is linked to the inspiring legend of Savitri, a devoted wife who is said to have outwitted Yama, the god of death, to bring back her husband’s life.

The date of Vat Savitri Vrat differs due to the use of two main lunar calendar systems in India—the Amanta and Purnimanta calendars.

  • Purnimanta Calendar: Predominantly followed in northern states such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, and Haryana, Vat Savitri Vrat falls on Jyeshtha Amavasya (new moon day), which coincides with Shani Jayanti. In 2025, this is on Monday, May 26.
  • Amanta Calendar: Used in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and most southern states, the same vrat is observed as Vat Purnima Vrat on Jyeshtha Purnima (full moon day), which in 2025 falls on Tuesday, June 10.

This difference in dates means women in northern India celebrate the vrat about 15 days earlier than those in the western and southern parts of the country.

The Legend Behind Vat Savitri Vrat

The vrat is based on the legendary story of Savitri and Satyavan. According to Hindu mythology, Savitri was a devoted wife whose husband Satyavan was destined to die young. When Yama, the god of death, came to claim Satyavan’s soul, Savitri’s unwavering determination and intelligence impressed Yama so much that he granted her a boon. Through her cleverness and devotion, she secured the return of her husband’s life.

This tale symbolizes love, commitment, and the power of faith. Married women observe the Vat Savitri Vrat in honor of Savitri’s dedication, praying for their husbands’ long and healthy lives.

Vat Savitri Vrat remains an important festival celebrated with devotion across India, with regional variations in its observance dates. Whether on Amavasya or Purnima, the vrat is a beautiful tradition that honors the strength of marital love and the blessings of longevity. This year, knowing the exact dates and significance will help devotees observe Vat Savitri Vrat with the reverence it deserves.
